Cwmneol colliery, near Aberdare.
The Cwmneol South pit opened to the Seven Feet seam at 359 yards deep in1848 by Messrs. Carr and Morrison. It also went by the name Morris's pit, probably after one of the owners. North pit or "Lanky pit" (upcast) was added by 1850. Ventilation was by furnace initially and winding by water balance until 1855.
An accident occurred here on Thursday the 28th of January, 1855,
when the cage in which eight men was ascending the shaft over-shot
the pit top and crashed into the head-gear. The force of the impact
broke the winding rope and the cage and its occupants fell the 240
yards to the pit bottom, killing all eight miners.
They were;
Davies, Jenkin aged 24 Hopper, William 17 Jones, Thomas 30 Kelley, Phillip 25 Thomas, Samuel 25 Thomas, Daniel 24 Thomas, William 17 Weeks, Richard 23
In 1865 the Aman Aberdare Coal Co. Ltd .became the new owners, although by 1868 it was in the hands of Powell Duffryn Company.
Production ceased in 1893 to deepen the shafts in order to work the lower seams and restarted in 1898.
