Penygraig Colliery

Situated in the Ely valley this colliery was started as a level to work the No.2 Rhondda seam in 1858 by Messrs. Mosses Rowlands, a local Mining Engineer and founder of the Penycraig Coal Co.

By 1864 two shafts had been sunk to reach the No.3 Rhondda bituminous coal levels.

The was the Naval Steam Coal Co. was formed in the mid 1870's by Messrs. Rowlands and William Morgan to extend their interest into the Steam coal measures. 

From the Inspector of Mines list 1896, there were 220 men employed at Penygraig Nos.2 and 3 pits, producing House and Manufacturing coal.

In 1908 the total workforce had fallen to 126.

It closed in 1919.

Curteis, Greenhill and Ware sank this steam-coal colliery in 1864.

In 1870 the owners were, Pentre and Church colliery Co., which was formed by the Cory Brothers.

An explosion occurred here on the 24th of February 1871, killing 38 men and boys.

It happened about 9.30pm on the nigh shift, the force of the blast caused extensive damage to the headgear allowing only one side of the pit to operate. A rescue party comprising of five men descended the shaft, but soon as the cage reached pit bottom they were overcome by the affects of after-damp. Two of them succumbed to the gas and were numbered among the dead. see below

From the Inspector of Mines List 1896, Pentre, Upper and Lower pits, were owned by Cory Brothers and Co. Ltd., employing 1,125 men.

In 1908 there were 1,190 men employed and in 1918 the workforce totalled 795.

From a list 1923, there were 838 employed, producing from the Upper and Lower Five Feet, Yard and Bute seams.

It closed in 1929.
