Llest Colliery, Garw Valley, 1899.
Situated at Pontyrhyl in the Garw Valley, this colliery is mentioned in a list dated 1880 under the owners Llest Coal Co. Ltd.
From the Inspector of mines list 1896, there were 154 men employed at this House coal colliery.
An explosion occurred here on the 18th of August 1899 killing 19 men and boys. The above photograph depicts the scene soon after this tragic event.
One of the victims William Thomas (Tydu) was overcome by afterdamp after leaving another part of the mine to attempt a rescue of the stricken men.
Production ceased at this colliery in 1902.
