Ocean (Garw) colliery, Blaengarw, 1986.

Opened in 1885 by the Blaengarw Ocean Coal Co. and originally called the Garw colliery, it took its new name from the Ocean Coal Co. Ltd. who owned the colliery until Nationalisation in 1947.

From the Inspector of Mines list 1896, there were 550 men working at this steam coal pit. By 1908 the workforce had grown to 781 and 607 in 1918.

From a list 1923, there were 749 men employed at the Garw, producing from the Nine, Six and Two Feet seams, New and Red.

In 1945 there were 682 employed.

In March 1975 it became linked underground to the neighbouring Ffaldau colliery and these collieries were then worked as a single unit.

During the mid 1970,s this unit employed 1,000 men producing from the Upper Nine feet and Gellideg seams.

The Garw/Ffaldau closed in December 1985.
