Abernant Colliery, Argoed.

Situated near Argoed in the Sirhowy valley.

Bargoed Coal Co Ltd. began sinking this colliery in 1888.

The Brithdir seam was reach at 160 yards and the first coal was mined here in 1890.

In 1896 there were 323 men employed here and during the first World War this number rose to nearly 500 men, producing the finest Smith coal in South Wales.

In 1918 there were 476 men employed. The workforce reduced to 282 in 1923.

Abernant was linked to a level at Hollybush and also to the nearby colliery of Llanover.

The colliery closed in 1932.
