Cwmburgwm water balance 1968

The Ebbw Vale Company erected this winding gear in the 1840’s. It was originally used to raise ironstone.

Cwmburgwm Colliery comprised a number of sites, including the Balance Pit. In 1860 an extensive slip or fall took place on the mountains, which closed Cwmbargwm or Bargwm Mine Pit of the Ebbw Vale Co. "The fall has now been cleared. Pit is now to be reopened." was so reported on 31st of May1862.

In 1869 it was reported that Cwm Burgwm Balance Pit was104 yards deep and raised Black Pins Mine (30 tons per day), that the Cwm Burgwm Pits were partly sunk but stopped and a level on the Red Ash seam near Cwm Burgwm was not worked.

When the Balance pit was last used is unclear from the various listings. The colliery was abandoned in 1877, but reappeared in 1891. By 1897 it was no longer working. In 1906 it was reported that "Understood that the old Cwmburgem (sic) coal levels (sic), situated at the foot of British Mountain, Talywain, which have been stopped about fifteen years, are to be reopened." and from 1907 they are under D. Buck. The Catalogue of Plans then gives abandoned 10th of August 1910.

There were later Cwmburgwm levels, the first opening in 1922. The last was abandoned on 28 of March 1931.
