Penybont Colliery, Abertillery
Opened by the Jaynes Tillery Colliery Co. in 1851.
This pit was also known as the Tillery Colliery.
Sometime after 1880 ownership changed hands to Powell's Steam Coal Co Ltd.
The shaft was deepened in 1886 to reach other seams.
From the Inspector of Mines list 1896, a total workforce of 681 men was producing coal from the Three Quarters and Elled seams.
In 1908 Penybont together with the Gray and Vivian Collieries (all owned by Powell's Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd.) employed 2,766 men, and in 1918 the workforce numbered 2,665.
From a report 1923, there were 1,010 men employed at Penybont, producing from the Black Vein, Three Quarter Vein, Big Vein and Meadow Vein seams.
Later it was taken over by Partridge Jones & John Paton Ltd.
In 1945 there were only thirteen men employed for pumping and ventilation only.
