Opened during the middle part of the nineteenth century the Bush level was one of many, which were driven into the hillsides of this part of Gwent to work the upper and lower Mynyddislwyn seams.
In 1880 it was owned by the Bush Coal Company, which was form by the Edwards family, who owned the farm (Pantysgawen) where the mine was situated.
From the Inspector of mines list 1896, it was mine for own consumption only.
Over time there were several entrances developed at the Bush. Around 1920 it came into the hands of Llwyn-Glo colliery co., who were employing 22 in 1923 at Bush old and new levels, working the Upper and Lower Mynyddislwyn seams.
By 1938 it was owned by the Newbridge Colliery Co., employing 25 men and in 1945 there were 32 men working at the New Bush level.
It closed around 1984, when the owner was Gerald Plant.
The land and buildings are now occupied by he The Welsh Owl and WildLife Sanctuary.
