Rhiw Level, nea Crumlin. Miners with their "Peg & Ball Caplamps."
The Rhiw mine operated between 1923 and 1974. It was opened by the Edwards brothers, who formed the Rhiw colliery Co.Ltd.
It worked the Mynyddislwyn seam, employing 13 in 1923. In 1938 only 7 men working.
Other information from Tony Cooke.
The nearby Brachty was formally abandoned on 31st of December 1933 and the taking of the Brachty Colliery Co. Ltd. was transferred to the Rhiw Colliery Co. six months later.
Post 1947, the Licenses, which were in the name of "Rhiw & Brachty", were with the following
J. I. Edwards & Miriam Evans (terminated 31st of July 1955)
E. Davies & others (terminated 29th of February 1964)
E. Goff & H. E. V. Goff (terminated 31st of March 1970)
H. E. V. Goff (terminated 4th of November 1974)
However, whilst Rhiw was listed continuously from 1923 to 1974, it was not until 1961 that the entry was amended to read "Rhiw & Brachty", and this continued up to closure in 1974, which is where I came in.
Other sources also refer to "Rhiw & Brachty". The 1964 survey gave "Estimated saleable reserves of coal at Rhiw and Brachty 14,200 tonnes" and later, "1969 small mines survey of opencast potential. Rhiw and Brachty, crop area built up. Opencasting not feasible."
