A Childs Dilemma
   
Can I have an Ice cream mam, 
the van is down the road 
Jonnie Jones has 40p 
I bet he'll buy a load 

Oh Tommy bach,come sit a while 
just here next to your mam 
And listen to my reasons love 
against your Ice cream plan 

For Mammy has no money 
I cannot raise enough 
For Dady's out of work on strike 
and things are pretty tough 

So try to understand my love 
the reason for this plight 
I'ts for a better future  
that things may be alright 

And one day when your older 
when you can understand 
You'll think back on these hardship days 
and think your Dad was grand 

So dry your eyes my lovely 
and hold your head up high 
For Daddy is a collier man

When your children ask for Ice cream 
You'll buy them some,and more 
And think back to those hardship days
